As in many other devoloping countries in the world, education has always served as one of the most important means for individuals to achieve upward social mobility in modern Turkey.
The formation of the contemporary Turkish education system started in the 19th century and was completed in 1924 when the religious schools were closed, new secular schools were set up, and elementary school attendance was made compulsory by the new Republic. In order to cope with educating the youngest population in Europe, the educational system has been expanding in the last few decades. Compulsory basic education was extended from five to eight years in1997.
This has brought new problems. However, attempts have been made to reduce average classroom size from 50 to 30 students by increasing the number of calssrooms and teachers. The teaching of foreign languages and computer skills are emphasised but under-funding had made it difficult for state schools to maintain high levels of staff professionalism and standards. Furthermore, there is neither a strong student motivation, nor parental and community involvement, so many private schools, universities and institutes of higher education have been established, claiming to offer beter standards and facilities. Native speakers are commonly employed in these private schools to encourage learning of foreign languages.
